Fresh ahead of the release of their fifth album, Humanz, 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russel have achieved an astonishing ubiquity with their smooth funk electronica, far beyond what Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett may have ever expected.
There’s no one who could have better given life to the idea of “smart pop” while confidently rebelling against the genre’s shackles. We must have known this day was coming but fans still weren’t prepared for the last video entry from Gorillaz’s groundbreaking Song Machine Season One format would come so soon. Its good to have something thats a genuine pop moment on every. Its nice to break up the album with something a little lighter. 'The melancholy hill - its that feeling, that place, that you get in your soul sometimes, like someones let your tyres down. Album opener ‘Phoner to Arizona’ is a nice enough opener, and the transition into the next track ‘Revolving Doors’ is really well done. They’re pockmarked and weathered, garish, rough around the edges, the residents of Banksy’s Dismaland as counterpoint to Mickey, Donald, and pals.
